Roving Sounds Radio Show Episode 4

West of the World: Introduction

This episode is going to be a little different to our regular programming. It’s the first in a mini-series of episodes about a new recording project that Roving Sounds is sponsoring.

I’m really excited to share this episode, and the project with you, because its the culmination of many years work, and incorporates music we haven’t discussed yet, and some of old friends.

Roving Sounds is sponsoring a collaboration between the Ashley de Neef Quartet (that’s me) and West-African Griot group Burkina Azza, which will be recorded in the next few weeks.

The music is a combination of West-African instruments, rhythms and structures, with jazz instruments and melodies. It’s an incredibly international project, with musicians from Australia, Italy, Croatia, USA and Burkina Faso all meeting in Toulouse, France to record.

This episode in particular is a brief introduction to the project, where the idea came from, and some examples of the sorts of sounds you can expect to hear.

The Roving Sounds Radio Show will be following this project closely over the next few weeks, and having an in-depth look at the goals, challenges and rewards of the project.

I’m really excited to share with you what I’ve been working on and hope you find it as interesting as i do.

Below is a video of the incredible musicians from Burkina Azza doing their thing – check out their flashy moves!
